Talk was more likely to be about fat quarters than quarterbacks at Sunday's Souper Bowl Sew-In at The Joyful Quilter. Fat quarters are important players in the quilt-making process, explained Bob Silverman, the quilt shop's co-owner. "It's a half-yard [of fabric] that we then cut in half horizontally, so you wind up with two 18-by-22-inch pieces. We have them all over the store," he said.

While much of the world gathered around televisions Sunday, seven women gathered in the two classrooms in the back of shop to work on their quilting projects. They quietly ironed fabric and sat at sewing machines, piecing together colorful quilt squares.
Later, turkey chili, salad, iced tea and snacks, all made by shop co-owner Susan Pettengill, were served.
A Super Bowl Sunday sewing event has been a tradition since the shop opened four years ago.
"We decided to do the Souper Bowl because a lot of people just don't want to watch the game, so it's something else to do, having soup and sewing," said Silverman.
Quilting and football do have something in common, he noted.
"It's a team sport in the sense that the ladies put their [quilt] blocks up on the wall and then we all kind of, like a committee, say, 'This looks good for a border' or, 'Move this block over there,' " he explained.
Sunday's team of seven quilters dealt deftly with yards of colorful fabric.
"I told the ladies to play nice," Silverman said with a laugh. "They're very focused right now, but once we start eating and talking and doing, believe me, it gets loud."
Mary Wade of Niskayuna was working on a quilt pattern called a four-patch posey with brown, orange, gold and green floral squares. The way the squares were stitched gave the illusion of flowers as seen through a kaleidoscope.
"I hope to get this top finished," Wade said as she sewed.
Pam Wrzesinski of Rotterdam was ironing backing for a pinwheel-patterned Christmas quilt she started a few years ago. The top to another one of her quilts was tacked up on a nearby wall.
"Having time just to come and bring your projects to work on, and if you have questions or problems, to have somebody to help is always a nice thing," she said.
Patti Muselbeck came all the way from Hagaman to participate in the Souper Bowl. She drove the distance because she enjoys the camaraderie she finds at the shop, and the chance to finish unfinished projects. "I have too many," she said with a laugh.
Muselbeck frequently attends events at The Joyful Quilter.
"Pajama parties, the last Saturday of the month, that's our favorite," she said. "We sew from 6 to about 3 or 3:30 [in the morning]. We bring snacks and we have a great time."

An interesting blog and tidbit about the JQ from our needlepointing friend Vicky DeAngelis's blog Mostly Needlepoint:
My trip to the Joyful Quilter which is my sisters favorite shop, was quite interesting. “Quilt Camp” was going on which I learned is just like one of our needlepoint retreats with a cute name… except that these ladies will sew till midnight! are they out of their minds or what? Quilters use the acronym “UFO’s” as needlepointers do, but I heard a new one! “PIGS” which is Projects in Grocery Sacs. I can honestly say I have allot of projects in bags, but can’t think of any in grocery sacs. I learned what a design wall is, which is a wall covered with batting and the quilts are layed out on the wall to check for design flaws, symmetry and flow. Brilliant!

Healthy Joyful Heart for 2011!

The sun's peeking out from behind the clouds and the air is a smidge warmer. At The Joyful Quilter, it's time to start thinking about summer! And when we think about summer we think about having a Healthy, Joyful Heart. The Healthy, Joyful Heart program is our way of inviting and encouraging all of us to take good care of ourselves. Maybe that means to take time out to just sit, or to sew a little more, or to take a walk, or to be sure to take those vitamins every day. Whatever we need to do to take care of ourselves, sometimes a little reward helps to get it done. So here's the reward we're offering this year: When you sign up for the Healthy, Joyful Heart program between now and May 31, and pay the program fee of $65, by the end of the summer you will have all the fabric you need to make a twin size quilt top. Pretty cool, right? The pattern, Twirling comes from Cozy Quilt Designs, and uses 2½" strip sets. The program starts on June 1, when you come in to pick up a June calendar and some pretty stickers, and start (or continue) doing good things for yourself. Do at least 3 good things each week during June, and bring your marked calendar back during the first week of July. We'll hand you a package of 2½" strips. We'll also give you a calendar and stickers for July. Do at least 4 good things each week during July, and bring your marked calendar back during the first week of August. We'll give you the background fabric of your quilt, along with a calendar and stickers for August. Do at least 5 good things each week in August, and bring your marked calendar back during the first week of September. We'll give you your quilt borders, binding and a hearty CONGRATULATIONS! We'll also let you know when we'll be holding complimentary demos to get you well on your way to finishing this delightful quilt. We love summer, and we love having a Healthy, Joyful Heart.
